Tom Miller's Upslope Portraits

Statement

Throughout my life from early childhood through my professional career I have always been drawing and painting. I have always loved "taking a line for a walk" (Paul Klee), and putting colors on canvas. When I retired in the fall of 2015 I decided to learn the art of screen printing. Screen printing is a perfect medium to combine line, color, and make multiples of an image.

Upslope Portrait Project

To learn the process of screen printing I decided to print 10 portraits of people I have met at my favorite waterihg hole - Upslope. By now I have printed over 100 and the Portrait Project has taken on a life of its own. I have been using two different types of color processes: CMYK (reproduces full-color artwork) and Posterization (poster-like reproductions having solid tones or colors). The Upslope Portrait Project will continue as long as I keep visiting my favorite watering hole.

"Color is a power which directly influences the soul."
- Wassily Kandinsky, Concerning the Spiritual in Art
